HEALTHY FOOD AND VEGETABLES

Aug 25, 2023

Vegetables and vegetables are essential elements in a healthy diet. Today, more than ever, we have a wide variety of natural foods at our disposal, and we have access to scientific information about the impact that diet has on our health. It has been wisely said that “we are what we eat.”

The importance of maintaining a varied diet, based on natural foods and as little processed as possible, is widely recognized by the medical community.

There are many recent studies on the importance of the microbiota (the set of bacteria that populate our intestine and that has currently been called “our second brain”. Various scientific documentation has proven that a diet rich in vegetables helps improve our microbiota. , which translates into a stronger immune system, better nutrient assimilation, less inflammation and better hormonal balance.

In this order of things, the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) created the Gut Microbiota and Health project in 2012, with the aim of disseminating knowledge and promoting debate around the intestinal microbiota. Its objective is to raise awareness and awaken interest about the bacterial community and its importance for our health and quality of life. With more than 135,000 research members worldwide, this platform has become an international reference point in this field.

The studies carried out by this society highlight the importance of including plant products in our diet to maintain good intestinal flora.

Eating vegetables regularly has innumerable benefits:

  • They are ideal for maintaining weight, due to their high fiber content, low calorie intake and ability to keep the glycemic index low.
  • They are an excellent source of folic acid, vitamins of group A, B and C, calcium, potassium and phosphorus among others.
  • They help reduce bad cholesterol or LDL and increase good cholesterol (HDL).
  • They help maintain low insulin levels and control inflammation.
  • Its regular consumption protects us from heart disease, obesity, diabetes and certain types of cancer.
